Here's something most homeowners don't know - one of the most common reasons an AC system stops working has nothing to do with the refrigerant or the compressor. It's a capacitor. A small, cylindrical component tucked inside your outdoor unit that most people never think about until the system stops doing its job.

The capacitor's role is simple but critical. It gives the motors in your system - the compressor and the fan - the electrical boost they need to start up and keep running. When it starts to fail, you'll notice things like the system taking longer to kick on, weak airflow, warm air coming through the vents, or the unit humming but not actually starting. Left alone, a weak capacitor puts extra strain on the motors and can eventually cause a much more expensive failure.

That's why catching it early matters so much. A capacitor replacement is a straightforward fix when we get to it before it takes something else down with it. When we're out on a tune-up or a service call and we test a capacitor that's reading outside its rated range, we flag it and take care of it on the spot. No waiting, no second trip.

We see this a lot during our AC repair calls. It's one of those issues where the symptom - system not cooling, system not starting - feels like it could be anything. But a good diagnostic narrows it down fast. If your system is struggling and you're not sure why, this is exactly the kind of thing we look for.
