A capacitor is a small cylindrical component inside your outdoor AC unit. Most homeowners have never heard of it. But when it fails, your system either won't start at all or runs so poorly that it can barely keep up with the heat inside your home.

Here's what makes capacitor problems tricky - the symptoms can look like a dozen other issues. Warm air blowing, the unit humming but not fully kicking on, or the system short-cycling on and off. Without the right diagnostic tools, it's easy to misdiagnose and replace the wrong part. We use a clamp meter to measure actual capacitance and compare it against the component's rated specs. That reading tells us exactly whether the part is the problem.

In this case, the capacitor was rated at 45 microfarads but was only reading 41. That gap might not sound like much, but it's enough to cause real performance issues and put added strain on the compressor - which is a much more expensive fix if it gets to that point. Catching it here saved the homeowner from a much bigger headache down the road.

Capacitor replacement is one of the more straightforward AC repairs we do, but doing it right still matters. Wrong part, wrong specs, or loose wiring can turn a quick fix into another service call. We make sure the replacement matches the system's requirements exactly and that everything is wired back cleanly before we button it up.

If your AC is acting up - struggling to start, not cooling like it used to, or making a humming noise - don't ignore it. These are often early signs of a failing capacitor or another electrical component that's easy to fix when caught early. Our AC repair and HVAC tune-up services are built around finding the real problem fast and fixing it right the first time.
