Here's something most homeowners never see until it's already causing problems - algae buildup inside your AC's drain pan and condensate line. Your air conditioner pulls moisture out of the air as it cools your home. That moisture has to go somewhere, and it drains out through a condensate line. When algae takes hold in that pan or line, it doesn't take long before things get ugly.

A clogged drain line means standing water. Standing water means your system can trigger a safety shutoff - or worse, overflow and cause water damage near your air handler. On top of that, you lose cooling efficiency while the problem quietly gets worse. Most people don't realize their AC is struggling because of something this simple.

The fix isn't complicated, but it does require actually getting in there and clearing it out the right way. We flush the line, treat the pan, and make sure water is moving freely again. That foamy, murky buildup you see is the algae breaking down during the cleaning process - a pretty clear sign the treatment is doing its job.

This kind of maintenance ties directly into indoor air quality too. Sitting water and algae growth inside your system can introduce contaminants into the air you're breathing every day. Keeping the drain system clean is one of those behind-the-scenes things that keeps both your equipment and your home healthier. It's a small thing with a surprisingly big impact.

If your AC has been acting up - short cycling, not keeping up, or you've noticed water around the unit - a blocked drain line might be exactly what's going on. Routine maintenance catches this stuff before it turns into a service call or a damaged ceiling.
