Pool heat pumps get overlooked. Most homeowners assume if the pool is heating - even slowly - everything is fine. But a slow heat-up, warm water that never quite gets there, or a unit running constantly are all signs something is off. In this case, the culprit was a refrigerant leak in the access tube.

We opened up this Rheem pool/spa heat pump and got eyes on the internal components. The copper tubing near the filter drier showed clear signs of corrosion and leak residue - the kind of buildup that doesn't happen overnight. Refrigerant had been escaping slowly, and the system was working overtime trying to compensate. That's hard on the compressor and hard on your energy bill.

Once we tracked down the exact leak point, we made the repair and recharged the system to manufacturer specs using our digital manifold gauge set. Getting the refrigerant charge dialed in correctly matters a lot - too little and the system runs inefficiently, too much and you risk damaging the compressor. There's no guessing involved. We read the pressures, verify the numbers, and go from there.

This is also a good reminder of why regular maintenance isn't just a sales pitch. Catching corrosion early, checking refrigerant levels, and inspecting access tubing can stop a small issue from turning into a compressor replacement. Our HVAC tune-ups are designed to catch exactly this kind of thing before it becomes a bigger repair.

Refrigerant leaks don't fix themselves. If your pool heater is struggling to keep up or your heat pump seems to be running more than usual, it's worth having someone take a look inside.
