When a customer calls saying their AC isn't keeping up, we don't assume the worst. Sometimes the fix is simpler than you'd think - and this call was a perfect example of that.

What we pulled out of the drain line fitting was a fully blocked passage caked in rust, algae buildup, and grime - with a snail lodged right in the middle of it. Not exactly what you expect to find, but honestly, it explains everything. That kind of blockage stops condensate from draining out of the system. When water can't exit, the system backs up, shuts down, or just stops cooling the way it should.

A lot of homeowners don't even know their AC has a drain line. It's a small PVC pipe that carries moisture pulled from the air out of the unit. Over time, algae, debris, and - apparently - the occasional critter can build up inside it and cause a full blockage. The fix isn't always a major repair. But if it goes unaddressed, it can lead to water damage, mold, or a system that trips out on a safety float switch.

Keeping that line clear is part of good HVAC maintenance. It's also something we check during routine service calls. If your system isn't cooling the way it used to, or you're noticing water around the unit, a clogged drain line could be the culprit. We also offer duct cleaning services to make sure the rest of your system is just as clean and efficient as the day it was installed.

The job doesn't always look glamorous. But finding the actual cause of a problem - even when it's a snail in a pipe - is exactly what good diagnostics looks like.
